What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine is an umbrella term covering 5 branches of Medicine that originated in China. These are:

  1. Acupuncture
  2. Chinese Herbal Medicine
  3. Dietary Therapy (Shi Lao)
  4. Exercise Therapy (Qi Gong/ Tai Chi)
  5. Massage Therapy (Tui Na)

Losing Weight with Traditional Chinese MedicineSo what can Chinese Medicine do for weight loss? Or Weight gain to be more precise. Plenty. Successful, sustainable weight loss benefits from a big picture view. That is, a holistic viewpoint. That’s is one of Chinese Medicine’s biggest strengths.

An excellent Chinese Medicine practitioner will ask you about your diet, your sleep, your stress levels, your activity levels. Then they will find where the problems are in this picture. Then go about fixing them. Fostering a better balance. To help with weight gain, they’d usually use Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs to help you, as the combination can work quicker. As an overview, these what we can do to help you:

What we can’t do is stop you from eating poorly or eating too much. That’s your job. But we can help you identify why you do it & help you improve your eating habits.

Does Chinese Medicine have side effects?

Not really. Not when done by a registered, fully qualified TCM practitioner. Beware of Dry Needling! Practitioners use the term dry needling because they’re not qualified enough to perform Acupuncture.

Negative side effects can be feeling relaxed or sleepy. Which is only negative if it’s inconvenient. You could also occasionally have a bruise for a few days. This is uncommon though. And minor.

Positive side effects, yes. ie. people often find that their sleep improves, or their menstrual cycle improves, no matter what they’re having treatment for. I’ve seen this hundreds of times in my 20 years of private practice. Cool, huh?

Is Acupuncture Required for Weight Loss?

Not necessarily. If you eat the right foods, in the right amount, at the right times, you can lose weight yourself. But a great acupuncturist can help you work out what food plan is best for your constitution. And acupuncture can certainly help. Especially if you have problems with stress, sleep or hormones.

Are any Additional Treatments required?

You may be advised to take Chinese Herbal Medicine, or Qi Gong/ Tai Chi classes to help you also.

Costs associated with Chinese Medicine for Weight Loss

There are a few options & variables here.. ie. number of sessions required & who you see.

ie. if Acupuncture is required, 6 sessions is usually what it takes to make a positive, lasting change to your weight loss strategy.  At Freedom Chinese Medicine, we have 3 price options for 6 sessions, including a low cost open room Acupuncture facility.

So it ranges from $324.50 for 6 sessions in an Open Room to $490 in a Private Room (with an Associate). Click here to check out the details.

If you don’t want or need Acupuncture, costs are less. Then you’re looking at consultation fees for Chinese herbs & advice which, at Freedom Chinese Medicine are $60 for the initial 30 minute session & $45 for follow ups. Less for concession holders.

So that’s $285 for 6 sessions.

Remember, private health fund rebates may apply to all of the above, if you have extras cover for Chinese Medicine.

The cost of Chinese herbs is additional and averages $20 per week.

How Long Can We Expect to See Results?

6 sessions or 6 weeks on Chinese Herbs. If you’re eating appropriately of course!

Just remember, there are a few considerations that need to be addressed when undertaking a weight loss regimen. Namely, the underlying cause/s of why the additional weight has been able to accumulate in the first place. And the mechanisms associated with preventing the body from metabolising and shifting this additional weight already.

Addressing weight gain can have a variety of positive effects upon reducing any associated health risks. Namely, protecting the body’s internal organs from strain, over-use and decline in function, reducing the likelihood of developing weight associated diseases such as Hypertension and Diabetes mellitus, and reducing pain in individuals with weight associated joint dysfunction.

Excess weight may also hamper ones ability to lead a normal and active existence, due to weight becoming an inhibiting factor in daily life. Perpetuating the likelihood of many associated mood disorders.

So it’s well worth the effort!
